Fall Cleanup and Winterizing: October – December
This is the time to be planting bulbs for enjoying next spring. Installation should not take place until October and can continue until the ground freezes. Daffodils and Narcissus should be planted first to optimize root growth in the fall.
It is time to winterize your garden. By cutting back your dead perennials and removing leaves from ground cover and hedges, spring will be a much easier beginning. Removal of plant material debris prevents the spread of disease and eliminates nesting for insects. Leaf decay is best on the compost pile to use next year in your annual beds.
Trees and shrubs that flower before the end of June should be pruned immediately after flowering. Those that flower after the end of June should be pruned in winter or early spring before new growth begins, these plants develop buds in the spring of the flowering season.
Winter: November - March
This is the time to start planning your spring project. Schedule a meeting with the landscape designer for a consultation and site analysis. The design process can take from 2 – 6 weeks depending on the scope of the project and detail provided. From March through June is the busiest time of year for any landscape company, and getting the design done in advance gets your project scheduled sooner when the weather breaks in spring.
